One Coastline.
A Lot of Different Waves.
Sri Lanka's south coast gives us access to an incredible variety of waves, from forgiving beach breaks to long peeling waves and more technical reef breaks.
Where we surf
depends on you.
At Layback, we don't have one fixed "home break" where every guest surfs every day.
Your level, the swell, wind, tide, crowds and wave quality all help our coaching team decide where your group should surf that day.
Different levels. Different conditions. Different spots.
We Go Where
the Waves Take Us
Some mornings our groups may all surf in the same area. Other mornings, our beginner group might head one direction while intermediate or longboard groups go somewhere completely different.
The best surf spot isn't simply the closest one. It's the place offering the right combination of waves, conditions, safety and learning for your level that day.
The Right Wave
for Your Level
The best location for each stage of progression can change from day to day. Here's what we're looking for at each level.
- Building confidenceYour first sessions are about getting the fundamentals right: take-off, stance and board control.
- Forgiving conditionsFor many beginners, Weligama's sandy-bottom bay provides excellent learning conditions.
- It still variesEven within a large bay, conditions change from one area to another, so our coaches choose where to set up each morning.
- This is where surfing changesMoving beyond the whitewater means catching unbroken waves and choosing the right one.
- Positioning mattersSurfing along the open face and reading the lineup become the focus.
- The spot shifts dailyThe best location for this progression can change from day to day.
- Beyond the bayOur intermediate groups move between different beach and reef breaks depending on conditions and ability.
- Real progressionWave selection, positioning, take-off, generating speed, turns and reading the lineup.
- Becoming independentSessions are built around helping you surf with less guidance, not more.
- More than a small waveWave shape, speed and the way a wave breaks all matter for longboarding.
- Matched to the groupWe look for conditions that suit what you're working on: trimming, cross-stepping, or noseriding.
- Built around your goalsEvery session targets what you're actually trying to improve.
How Do We Decide
Where to Surf?
A break that was perfect yesterday might not be the right choice tomorrow. Our coaching team looks at conditions and chooses locations for progression, wave quality and safety.
We follow the conditions, not a timetable.
Locally Owned.
Locally Connected.
Our local coaches grew up around these communities and know the coastline, its waves and its people, with relationships built over years, not since we opened.
Knowing where to surf matters. Knowing how to behave when you get there matters just as much.
Our Playground
Sri Lanka's south coast, from Madiha through Mirissa, Weligama, Midigama and Ahangama. Rather than a fixed list of breaks, think of the coastline as our playground.

Weligama
A large sandy-bottom bay with numerous peaks and changing conditions. Its forgiving nature makes it particularly valuable for first-time and progressing surfers.

Midigama
A stretch of coastline known for its collection of reef breaks, a completely different experience from Weligama, opening up more technical, independent surfing.

Ahangama
Another collection of beach and reef setups. Different breaks respond differently to swell, giving our coaches more options for the day.

Mirissa
Heading east from Weligama opens another collection of wave options, a completely different environment when the conditions line up.

Madiha
Further along the coast are more technical reef setups for experienced surfers, when their ability and the conditions are appropriate.
You bring your board. We'll figure out where we're going.
"I'm intermediate.
Will I just surf Weligama?" No.
When you book, we'll ask about your experience. But once you're here, our coaches assess your surfing in the water, looking beyond whether you can simply stand up on a board.
