Sri Lanka Surf Camp

A locally owned surf and yoga camp in Weligama, built around structured coaching, progression and good times in and out of the water.

More Than a Surf Camp in Sri Lanka

Layback isn't a big retreat centre, and we've never wanted it to be.

Since 2017, our idea has been simple: create a friendly, intimate and laid-back place in Weligama where people can surf, meet like-minded travellers and feel at home for the week.

Surfing sits at the centre of the experience, with structured coaching, small groups and personal feedback designed to help you progress. But your week isn't only about the time you spend in the water. There's yoga, video analysis, surf theory, shared meals, pool time, coffee and plenty of time to simply enjoy being in Sri Lanka. Guests can also use our surfskates during their stay.

Come alone or with friends. Layback is designed to make it easy to become part of the week rather than simply stay in a room and turn up for a surf lesson.

Surf Coaching That Actually Helps You Progress

We don't just want instructors to push guests onto waves. We want guests to develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to eventually catch and surf waves independently.

Whether you're trying to stand up for the first time or working on turns, positioning and wave selection, the goal isn't simply to get you onto waves while you're here. We want you to understand more, make better decisions in the water and leave as a more independent surfer.

Our coaching is structured around your current level. Small groups allow our coaches to give personal attention and useful feedback rather than teaching everyone exactly the same thing.

Our local coaching team knows this coastline through years of surfing here. Sessions in the water are supported throughout the week by tools such as video analysis and surf theory, so surf lessons in Sri Lanka feel like part of a wider progression rather than a one-off activity.

Coaching Goes Beyond the Surf Session

Progress doesn't only happen while you're on a wave. Throughout the week, we use video, theory and training on land and in the pool to help you understand your surfing, build better habits and take what you learn back into the ocean.

Video Analysis

Watch your surfing back with your coaches, understand what's happening and get clear feedback on what to work on next.

Surf Theory

Learn about waves, positioning, technique, safety and the decisions that help you become a more independent surfer.

Pool Training

Practise surf-specific skills and techniques in a controlled environment before taking them into the ocean.

Your Surfing Videos

Keep your surfing footage so you can look back at your sessions and progression.

Surfskate

Use our surfskates for free during your stay. We also sometimes arrange informal sessions when people feel like joining.

Yoga

Five classes are included with Standard and Premium to complement your time in the water.

Our Surf Camp in Weligama, Our Home

Weligama gives us something that's difficult to find in one place: forgiving conditions for learning, room to progress and quick access to different waves along Sri Lanka's south coast.

Beginners can build confidence in Weligama Bay, while progressing surfers aren't limited to one break. Depending on ability, swell, wind and conditions, coaching groups can surf around Weligama and at suitable waves towards Mirissa, Midigama, Ahangama and Madiha.

But Weligama is more than where we surf. It's our home.

Being locally owned means we want guests to experience the place beyond the beach. That might mean local food, recommendations you won't find on a generic itinerary, meeting people from the area or simply understanding a little more about everyday life here.

Surf. Yoga. Repeat. And Sometimes Do Nothing

Surfing and yoga naturally complement each other. Yoga gives you time away from the water to move, stretch, recover and reset before the next session.

At Layback, you can combine the two without turning your holiday into a rigid wellness schedule.

If you're looking for a surf and yoga retreat in Sri Lanka, our Standard and Premium packages combine structured surf coaching with five yoga classes during the week, while still leaving time for the pool, coffee, exploring Weligama or simply doing nothing.

Come Solo. You Won't Be the Only One

A lot of our guests arrive in Sri Lanka alone, and the weekly format is intentionally designed to make meeting people easy.

You surf together, eat together, practise yoga together and share the same spaces throughout the week.

It's social without being a party camp, and there's no pressure to join everything. The aim has always been to create something closer to a home away from home than a hotel where everyone happens to surf.

Born in Weligama

Layback opened in Weligama in 2017 and remains locally owned.

Our surf coaching team is local too, with coaches who grew up around these waves and know this coastline through years of surfing here.

For us, being local isn't just something to put in a headline. It shapes the experience we want guests to have. We want you to eat well, meet people, discover places beyond the obvious stops and leave knowing a little more about Weligama than when you arrived.

We're not interested in creating a resort bubble. Layback should feel connected to the town around it.

Before You Come

Surf Levels & Coaching
I've never surfed before. Can I join?
Yes. Many Layback guests arrive having never surfed before. Beginner coaching starts with the fundamentals and gradually builds confidence, ocean awareness and independent surfing skills.
I'm intermediate. Will I only surf in Weligama?
No. Weligama is excellent for beginners and progression, but more experienced surfers are not automatically limited to Weligama Bay. Depending on ability, swell, wind and conditions, suitable groups can surf different breaks around Weligama and Sri Lanka's south coast, including areas around Mirissa, Midigama, Ahangama and Madiha.
Do you also have a surf camp in Mirissa or Ahangama?
No, we're only based in Weligama, that's where Layback's accommodation, coaching team and facilities are. We don't have a separate surf camp in Ahangama or Mirissa. But depending on ability and conditions, our coaching groups do travel out to surf breaks in those areas as part of your week with us.
My partner is a beginner and I'm intermediate. How will that work?
You can stay at Layback and experience the retreat together without having to surf in the same group. Guests are grouped by ability. Your partner can join an appropriate beginner group while you surf with a group suited to your level. You'll still share the rest of the camp experience together.
Can different surf levels join the same retreat week?
Yes. Beginners, green-wave surfers, intermediate surfers and longboarders can stay during the same week while joining coaching groups appropriate to their ability.
How do you decide where each surf group surfs?
Our coaches consider surf level, swell, wind, wave conditions and what each group is working on. We don't simply take every guest to the same beach. The goal is to find suitable conditions for each group.
How do you decide my surf level?
Before arrival we'll ask about your surfing experience. Coaches can also assess you and adjust your group where necessary. Guests do not need to perfectly identify their own level before booking.
What if my surf level changes during the week?
Groups can be adjusted. If your coaches feel another group is more appropriate as you progress, your placement can change.
I'm intermediate. What will I actually work on?
Depending on your current surfing and the conditions, intermediate coaching can focus on positioning, wave selection, timing, generating speed, turns, technique, reading waves and surfing different types of breaks.
How long is a surf lesson?
A typical surf session includes approximately 90 minutes in the water, together with briefing, preparation and feedback around the session.
Is there surf theory and training as well?
Yes. Surfing isn't only about repeating movements in the water. Throughout the week, coaching is supported by surf theory and training that can help guests better understand waves, positioning, technique, safety and progression.
Do you use video analysis?
Yes. Video analysis is used during the week to help guests see their surfing and understand technique, positioning and areas to work on.
Can I use the surfskates at Layback?
Yes. Guests are welcome to use our surfskates during their stay. From time to time we also arrange an informal surfskate session, or guests can join when we're having a session, but this isn't a fixed or guaranteed part of the weekly programme.
Surfboards & Equipment
Do I need to bring my own surfboard?
No. We have boards available for different surf levels, so guests do not need to travel with their own board.
What kind of surfboards do you have?
We have a range including softboards, hardboards, shortboards and longboards. Our board range is approximately 6'0 to 9'4, including longboards around 9'2 to 9'4.
Can I bring my own surfboard?
Yes. Guests who prefer their own equipment are welcome to bring their board.
Do you provide rash guards?
Yes. Rash guards are available for surf lessons.
Swimming, Weather & Safety
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer for beginner sessions, which begin in shallow water. However, guests who are not confident swimmers must tell their coach. For more advanced surfing, stronger swimming ability becomes increasingly important.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Tropical rain itself generally doesn't prevent surfing. Surf decisions depend more importantly on ocean conditions. If conditions are unsafe or inappropriate, our coaching team can adjust the plan, postpone or reschedule where appropriate.
When is the best time to surf in Weligama?
Weligama offers surfable conditions for much of the year, with each season bringing something a little different. From November to April, the south coast generally sees consistent surf and a wide choice of nearby breaks, making it a great time for all levels. April and May can still offer plenty of good surf, often with fewer people in the water.

From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings more swell and changing winds, but Weligama Bay remains one of the more sheltered spots on the south coast. September can be particularly good for beginners, with plenty of opportunities to learn and progress. For intermediate surfers, the choice of nearby breaks can be more conditions-dependent during this period, so we choose the best available spot each day based on the forecast and your level.
What to Pack
What should I pack for surf camp?
Swimwear, lightweight comfortable clothing, a hat or cap, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, high-SPF sun protection, zinc for surfing, personal medication, toiletries, menstrual hygiene products if needed, and anything personally important that may be difficult to replace while travelling.
What sunscreen do you recommend?
Sun protection is very important when spending time in the ocean. We recommend high-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen, and reef-conscious zinc-based sun protection for surfing where possible, along with physical sun protection such as a hat or rash guard.
Should I bring a water bottle?
Yes. We encourage guests to bring a reusable water bottle. Free drinking-water refills are available at Layback, helping guests avoid repeatedly buying single-use plastic bottles.
Should I bring my own medication?
Yes. Guests who regularly use prescription or personal medication should bring enough for their trip and keep important medication with them while travelling.
Should I bring menstrual hygiene products?
If you use a particular type or brand, we'd recommend bringing enough for your stay. Basic products can be available locally, but bringing your preferred products avoids having to find the exact one after arrival.
Arrival & The Week
When does the retreat start?
Sunday. Retreats run Sunday to Sunday.
When can I check in?
Sunday from 15:00 to 22:00. Welcome dinner is at 19:30.
Can I arrive before check-in?
Yes. Guests are welcome to drop luggage earlier, although rooms may not be ready until 15:00.
What if I arrive late?
Guests arriving after the welcome dinner should let us know in advance. Dorm check-in is not available after 22:00.
When is my first surf lesson?
Monday morning.
What happens on Thursday?
Thursday is our regular day off from scheduled surf and yoga activities. Guests can rest, explore Sri Lanka or make their own plans.
What if I arrive late or leave early?
You can arrive late or leave early if needed, but any activities missed because of a late arrival or early departure are not refunded, substituted or rescheduled, since surf and yoga sessions run as group activities and can't be repeated separately for one guest. Please let us know your travel plans in advance so we can help make your arrival or departure as smooth as possible.
Can I stay for more than one week?
Yes, subject to availability. The maximum stay is four weeks per person per season.
Camp Life
Can I come alone?
Absolutely. Many Layback guests travel solo. The weekly camp format creates plenty of opportunities to meet other guests through surfing, meals, yoga and time around camp.
Is Layback a party camp?
No. Layback is social, relaxed and friendly, but it is not a party camp. Guests may go out together, but the camp itself is built around surfing, progression, community and a relaxed week.
Do I need to speak English?
A basic understanding of English is recommended because coaching, safety instructions and group communication are conducted in English.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
We can accommodate common dietary preferences such as vegetarian and vegan. Please let us know in advance so our kitchen can plan accordingly.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, the minimum age for guests booking independently is 18. Younger guests may be able to join if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Booking
What if I don't know which package or surf level to choose?
You'll be able to tell us about your surfing experience, and our team and coaches can help determine the right level for you. In short: Basic is surf-focused, Standard is a complete surf and yoga experience, and Premium adds more activities, food and extras.
Can I change my dates after booking?
Yes, one free date change is available if made at least 28 days before your arrival, subject to availability. Changing more than once, or making a change within 28 days of arrival, may incur a fee depending on how close to your arrival date the change is and whether you're in a dorm or private room. Full details are in our Terms & Conditions.
How do I book a surfing camp in Sri Lanka with Layback?
You can book directly through our availability calendar, choosing your dates and preferred package (Basic, Standard or Premium). We recommend booking a Sri Lanka surf camp a few months ahead during peak season, since spots for each weekly retreat are limited.
What makes Layback different from other Sri Lanka surf camps?
Unlike many larger Sri Lanka surf camps, our surf camp in Weligama has been locally owned and run since 2017. Our small groups, structured coaching progression and local surf team are built around helping you actually improve.
Is Layback the best surf camp in Sri Lanka?
That's not really something we'd claim about ourselves, "best" depends on what someone's actually looking for. What we can say honestly: we're a small, locally owned surf camp in Weligama, focused on real coaching and progression. We're currently ranked among the top surf camps in Weligama on TripAdvisor, based on reviews from people who've actually stayed with us. Whether that makes us the best surf camp in Sri Lanka is really something you'd have to come and decide for yourself.
Is Layback's surfing camp in Sri Lanka suitable for both beginners and intermediates?
Yes. As a surfing camp in Sri Lanka, Layback welcomes complete beginners through to intermediate surfers, with coaching groups matched to ability rather than a single fixed level.
