Surfboard Damage Cover Policy
Surfboards get knocked, dinged and occasionally broken. Our optional Surfboard Damage Cover gives you protection against accidental damage to Layback equipment during your stay.
You can choose Standard Cover, Full Cover or no damage cover. The level of protection you choose applies for the duration of your booked week.
Choose Your Cover
€20
Standard Cover protects against accidental, repairable surfboard damage during your stay.
Examples include:
- Dings
- Cracks
- Fin damage
- Fin-box damage
- Minor nose, tail or rail damage
- Other accidental damage that can reasonably be repaired
There is no excess or contribution to pay for damage that is covered by Standard Cover.
However, Standard Cover does not cover a snapped surfboard, a board broken beyond economical repair, or major structural damage that results in the board being considered a total loss.
If a board is snapped or damaged beyond economical repair, you may be responsible for its reasonable replacement value.
€50
Full Cover includes everything covered by Standard Cover, plus major accidental damage. This includes:
- A snapped surfboard
- Major structural damage
- A board accidentally damaged beyond economical repair
For accidental damage covered by Full Cover, there is no repair or replacement cost for you to pay.
Full Cover still does not cover loss, theft, intentional damage, reckless behaviour, misuse, unauthorised use or damage caused by ignoring instructions from Layback coaches or staff.
The Simple Difference
Repairable accidental damage is covered.
Snapped or irreparable boards are not covered.
Repairable accidental damage is covered.
Snapped or irreparable boards are covered.
Your Cover Follows You, Not the Board
Damage Cover applies to the Layback surfboards you are authorised to use during your stay rather than to one specific board.
If you change boards during the week, your cover continues.
If a board is damaged in a covered incident and Layback provides you with another board, your selected cover continues to apply for the remainder of your booked week.
What Isn't Covered?
Neither Standard nor Full Cover applies to:
- Loss or theft of a surfboard or other equipment
- Intentional damage
- Reckless or deliberately careless use
- Damage caused by ignoring instructions from Layback coaches or staff
- Using equipment in a way it was not intended to be used
- Allowing another person who is not authorised by Layback to use your board
- Damage occurring while equipment is being used outside the conditions or locations specifically restricted by Layback staff
- Damage caused while transporting a board independently where reasonable care was not taken
Full Cover protects against major accidental damage. It does not mean that a board can be treated without reasonable care.
What Does "Beyond Economical Repair" Mean?
A board may be considered beyond economical repair when Layback determines that it cannot be safely or reasonably restored for continued guest use, or when the cost and extent of the repair make replacement the reasonable option.
This includes, but is not limited to, boards that are snapped or have suffered severe structural damage.
Layback will assess the damage based on the condition of the board and, where appropriate, the reasonable cost of professional repair.
What Happens If I Damage More Than One Board?
Your Damage Cover remains active for your booked week, even after a covered incident.
Each incident will be assessed separately and must meet the conditions of your selected cover.
If there are multiple accidental incidents during the week, cover continues to apply, provided each incident falls within the terms of your selected cover.
Repeated damage resulting from reckless behaviour, misuse or failure to follow staff instructions is not covered.
What If I Don't Choose Damage Cover?
Damage Cover is completely optional.
If you choose not to purchase Standard or Full Cover, you may be responsible for the reasonable repair cost of any Layback equipment you damage.
If a board is damaged beyond economical repair, you may be responsible for its reasonable replacement value, taking into account the board and its condition rather than automatically charging the retail price of a brand-new board.
Reporting Damage
Please tell a Layback coach or member of staff as soon as you notice damage to a board.
Reporting damage does not automatically mean you will be charged. It allows us to inspect the board, keep it safe to use and arrange a repair when necessary.
Please do not continue surfing a damaged board if doing so could make the damage worse.
Damage that becomes significantly worse because it was knowingly not reported may not be fully covered.
When Does Cover Apply?
Standard and Full Damage Cover apply for the duration of the guest's booked Layback week and only to Layback equipment the guest has been authorised to use.
Cover begins when the guest is first provided access to Layback surfboards during their booked stay and ends when their board access ends at the conclusion of that stay.
Damage Cover cannot be purchased after damage has already occurred.

A Few Important Things to Know
Surfboard Damage Cover is provided by Layback as an optional damage waiver associated with the use of our equipment. It is not an insurance policy.
Damage Cover applies only to accidental damage that falls within the conditions described on this page.
Where there is uncertainty about how damage occurred, Layback may speak with the guest, coaches or staff who were present and inspect the equipment before determining whether the incident is covered.
We aim to handle damage fairly and reasonably. Normal wear and tear from ordinary surfboard use is not treated as guest damage.
